Shaw Island board reviews teacher housing payment and fundraising plan as district seeks $300,000–$400,000

The Shaw Island School District Board reviewed the first Application and Certificate of Payment from Swal’lech Construction and discussed a change order for pouring concrete for a pump house. Director Carol Criss presented the payment documentation and Superintendent Becky Bell said she would investigate the cost of the change order before the board took further action.
On fundraising, Bell reported she is working with the San Juan Island Community Foundation, which requires a $5,000 minimum to open an account and indicated it would seed that amount. Bell told the foundation the District is seeking roughly $300,000 to $400,000 to complete teacher housing and that the District would need a 504(c)(3) sponsor to accept charitable donations. Director Criss said $25,000 in pledges remain to be collected. The board also discussed logistics raised by Swal’lech Construction about moorage for workers; the board determined there was no conflict of interest for Director Teresa Mason in referring the contractor to the Masons who own the marina.
