Commissioners debate Chamber’s Opportunity Zone 2.0 nomination list
Summary
Commissioners discussed a Mobile Chamber-submitted list of census tracts for Opportunity Zone 2.0; one commissioner objected that the chamber’s list excluded tracts in her district and said she had not been consulted. Staff said they would revert to three previously identified county tracks if an agreeable chamber list is not provided.

The commission considered an add-on request from the Mobile Chamber to submit an Opportunity Zone 2.0 nomination list to the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs. The chamber’s proposed list differed from a county-prepared list, prompting at least one commissioner to say the chamber’s list removed a tract from her district and that she had not been consulted. "I had no input on this," the commissioner said, adding she wanted to understand what she would be approving before signing a letter of support.
Staff explained the procedural options: if the add-on list is accepted by the county contingent on an agreeable final list from the chamber, it would supersede the county-submitted tracks; if not, the county could revert to three previously identified tracts (Chickasaw, Tillman's Corner and Sims). The commission discussed approving the add-on subject to returning an agreeable list; the item was moved and seconded for consideration.
