A public hearing on June 22 opened to accept comments on Greenville’s proposed application to the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program to build a community park behind Historic Downtown Greenville.
Ashton Hutchinson of the South Central Alabama Development Commission said the city "intends to apply under the Community Enhancement category" for a project on "approximately four acres" that would include "an amphitheater with a stage and restroom facilities, a splash pad, playground, memorial area, parking, and other recreational amenities." Hutchinson also told the Council that the city plans to pursue a separate grant to address drainage improvements at the site.
Mayor Jae’Ques Brown said the project is aimed to "enhance downtown Greenville, provide additional recreational opportunities for residents, and strengthen the City's ability to attract economic development and future investment." The record notes that the Community Enhancement grant requires a 10 percent local match; the application will be presented for formal Council approval at a future meeting prior to submission.
No additional public comments were received at the hearing, which concluded before the regular Council meeting.
