Superintendent Milt Dennison told the Skamania School District board on Aug. 19 that the district will receive free breakfasts and lunches for the next four years.
Dennison said the district submitted a modernization grant application but does not expect an award decision until spring; he also reported that student enrollment "has increased significantly" and described a staffing arrangement in which a paraeducator will share halftime between the first-and-second-grade classroom and the transitional kindergarten/kindergarten classroom.
The announcement means the district's meal program will be covered for multiple school years, reducing the need for meal charges at school while the district awaits the modernization grant outcome. The board did not take a separate vote on the nutrition program during the meeting.
