Board hears timeline update as Teacher Housing Project prepares to break ground

Architect Philip Burkhardt of PBW Architects updated the Shaw Island School District Board on the Teacher Housing Project’s schedule and site work.
Burkhardt said PBW and Project Manager John Bingham met with Swal’lech Construction and the excavation subcontractor on Jan. 5; the subcontractor plans to bring machinery and "begin breaking ground at the end of the month." He said San Juan Surveying will locate the build site and that Swal’lech supplied a Gantt chart for the project schedule. The board discussed whether the excavator could also dig the septic while on site and noted that, "while the electrical trenches are open an extra 2-inch conduit would be put in for future use." Board members discussed site logistics and tree removal. The construction contract allows removal of up to 18 trees; Burkhardt said at least eight trees would be removed for the current building footprint. Superintendent Becky Bell asked Director Jon Shannon, in his maintenance role, to direct Swal’lech on where to stack downed trees. The board also discussed the possibility of acquiring a donated three-bedroom house, noting uncertainties about moving costs, upgrades and local zoning requirements that would need further review.
The update closed with an agreed task list: locate the build site, coordinate excavation and septic timing, and consider conduit placement and tree-stacking logistics. PBW’s representative left the meeting after this item.
