Council introduces ordinance to exempt 1¢ parish sales tax on firearms during state 'Second Amendment Weekend'

On July 13 the Tangipahoa Parish Council voted to introduce T.P. Ordinance No. 26-20, which would exempt the Parish one-cent sales tax on purchases of firearms, ammunition and hunting supplies during the State of Louisiana Second Amendment Weekend sales tax holiday scheduled Sept. 4–6, 2026.
The motion to introduce the ordinance was made by Councilman Lionell Wells and seconded by Councilman David Vial; the council set a public hearing for Monday, July 27, 2026 at 5:30 p.m. if residents wish to offer input. The introduction carried with the same roll-call majority recorded throughout the meeting (members present voting YEA; John Ingraffia recorded as absent).
If adopted after the public hearing and any required administrative steps, the ordinance would mirror the state sales tax holiday locally by suspending the parish’s one-cent sales tax for the identified goods during those three days.
