Selectmen express safety concerns about 'Ice Cream Tamwich' ride proposed on town roads

The Sandwich Selectmen on July 27 raised safety and logistical concerns about a proposed cycling event advertised as the "Ice Cream Tamwich."
Organizer Chris Pagoda presented the proposal as a bike ride (not a race) with two course options primarily on class V and VI roads through Sandwich and Tamworth, a start/staging area at the Fairgrounds, a proposed mass start, and use of a third‑party flagging company for critical intersections. Pagoda said the event could attract up to 200 participants but noted first-year turnout is uncertain. The Selectmen and several attendees expressed concern about road width, visibility on town roads, and sanitation near properties bordering town roads; they said the proposed use may exceed an appropriate use of town roads.
Members of the Board and public commenters suggested reducing capacity or confining the event to Tamworth, and the Board asked for more logistical detail. The Selectmen also questioned whether camping and staging at the Fairgrounds are permissible and noted the Fairgrounds are not permitted campgrounds; the Fair Association’s advertising about camping will be addressed separately. The Board did not approve the proposal and said it may reconsider after the organizer supplies more information or logistical changes.
