Council presses for earlier distribution of litigation materials and CJIS training to view restricted background-check data

Several councilmembers objected to receiving litigation documents at short notice and said they want more time to read materials before voting. One council member asked that when litigation is on the agenda, the information “encompass” the issue and be provided prior to the meeting so members can prepare.
Police and counsel explained that some background-check material is legally protected and that limited information can be shared in closed session. A police lieutenant said background checks (driving records and criminal-history screens) had been initiated for vendors that passed initial phases, and a CJIS trainer offered to facilitate certification so council members could receive restricted details in an appropriately secured setting. “There are ways to get certified, and we can take care of that for you,” the trainer said.
