A community reading in Brockton brought residents together to mark the 10th anniversary of an annual staging of Frederick Douglass’s July 5, 1852 oration. The program opened with event organizers thanking attendees and placing the reading in a local historical context.
"This is such a thrill, and it's such an important day. We've been doing this now for 10 years," the Moderator said, introducing a lineup that included NAACP Brockton branch president Phyllis Ellis and reenactor Steven Abrams. Organizers noted nearby local landmarks tied to Douglass’s history and framed the reading as both education and civic memory work.
