Whitingham weighs highway garage redesign as bridge grant advances

Road Commissioner Stanley Janovsky reported the town secured a grant to replace the steel structure under the Frank Dix bridge; the grant covers 90% of the costs with a likely 10% local match, which may be satisfied in-kind. Janovsky signed the grant agreement and said the decking on the bridge is in good condition while the substructure will be replaced.
On the highway garage project, the board reviewed a new, simplified drawing presented by DEW showing a six-bay layout with the same roofline and no small setback at the far bay; that change could reduce construction costs by about $50,000. The most recent estimate available to the board was $3,962,381 including contingencies and winter-condition allowances. The board approved Stevens & Associates to continue on design work aimed at lowering cost and expects a bond vote in November to finance construction.
