County advances SS4a engineering RFQ and explores DOJ jail‑operations grant for expansion

Separately, Captain Philip Bernard and other staff briefed commissioners on a U.S. Department of Justice jail‑operations grant summary they had reviewed. Staff described the DOJ opportunity as a nationwide program with $3,000,000,000 in total grant funding available and noted individual jurisdictions have previously received awards up to $10,000,000; commissioners discussed the need for a concise application packet (rendering, cost estimate and timeline) and whether to invest roughly $800,000 for thorough plans to improve competitiveness.
Chair (speaker 3) and staff agreed to pursue the RFQ and to prepare a three‑page packet (rendition, estimated cost, summary) to carry to potential funders if the commission signals support at the Tuesday meeting.
