Members of the Brooks County Communications Tower Committee — including Susan Kibbe (South Texas Properties Rights Association), Justin Zelaya (SWZ/Committee), Sheriff Martinez, JV Rivera, Ruben Ramirez (EMC/Fire Chief), and John Gomez — presented an update on a proposed communications tower program for southern Brooks County. County Auditor August Patroelj told the court there is not yet revenue being collected; he said MOUs are a gating issue. EMC Ruben Ramirez said some MOUs are simply awaiting amounts to be billed and that revenue generated could help maintain the project; he also said tower space could be leased to other companies.
Following the presentation, the court voted unanimously to create an Emergency Management Coordinator position to absorb current contracted EMC duties and add responsibility for tower operations. The position was approved at a $40,000 base salary with an additional $15,000 for supervising and maintaining tower operations in south Brooks County; the court recorded the position as effective June 1 and instructed the auditor to create a new line item for the additional $15,000.
