The Accomack County Board of Zoning Appeals approved SUSE000064-2026, granting a special-use permit for two Connex storage containers on the residential portion of an 11.7-acre parcel, subject to seven conditions including a one-year term.
Staff had framed the application as an after-the-fact request and recommended denial in the absence of building plans for a future dwelling. Mark Mason, the applicant, testified the containers house his personal property and that he had cleared the land with intentions for future use. "I should've came down here 1st thing and asked what I could do with these storage containers," Mason said.
Deputy county administrator Lee Pammett and other staff warned that approving containers without a plan for development could set a precedent allowing unplanned containers on other lots; board members discussed a compromise that would allow the containers for a defined period. The board voted to approve the special-use permit with seven conditions recommended by staff plus a one-year time limit to give the applicant an opportunity to resolve future construction or relocation plans.
