Weldon Hurd took the oath of office as mayor of the City of Abilene, pledging to "faithfully execute the duties of the office of mayor" and to "preserve, protect and defend" the U.S. and Texas constitutions, the council recorded. The council and audience offered congratulations after the oath.
Jay Patterson was sworn in as councilmember for Place 3. After his oath Patterson said, "This is a big day for me and my family, and I look forward to serving the citizens of Abilene, not just the North Side, but, for everyone putting their faith in me," and he pledged to serve the whole city. Patterson also took a moment to honor fellow councilmember Blaise Reagan for his service.
