Board moves to put special-events accessibility checklist up for adoption
Summary
The board reviewed a comprehensive accessibility checklist for special events (emergency contacts, power-chair charging, quiet areas, interpreters, accessible seating and minimum turning spaces) and agreed to put a final version on next month's agenda for a vote; staff proposed attaching the checklist to the city's special-event intake system.

Board members reviewed a multi-page accessibility checklist intended for use with the city’s special-event intake system and discussed whether the checklist could be required, optionally displayed, or certified by event organizers.
"Please indicate an emergency contact table with phone number," Chair read from the checklist, which also asks event hosts to provide designated locations for power wheelchair charging, accessible walkways, a quiet area, ADA-accessible restrooms, service-dog relief areas and a request-for-accommodation statement in marketing materials.
The checklist specifies measurable items such as minimum 5-foot turning spaces in exhibit areas, 34-inch or lower counter heights for some service points, and that at least 5% (but not less than 1%) of portable toilet units be accessible. Staff recommended attaching the checklist to the city’s special-event software so organizers can run through required items; staff noted the list would be a recommended compliance checklist, and enforcement or certification would require additional legal review.
Board members agreed to place a final checklist on next month’s agenda for formal adoption and directed staff to prepare the item for vote.
