Abilene Heritage Square move complete; grand opening set for May 16

Miss Hammer, a library staff member, told the board the main library at 202 Cedar closed on April 10 as staff prepared the new Abilene Heritage Square location. "The new shelving arrived at Abilene Heritage Square and has been installed on all 3 floors," she said, and reported the collection move took place April 13–24.
Hammer described design elements still being finished, including a children's Storybook Forest with a large book entrance and reading niches, and a three-story suspended glass sculpture called Gathered Radiance that is being installed through the atrium. She said hundreds of blown-glass pieces are part of the sculpture and that some were decorated by Abilene residents and will be incorporated into the installation.
The grand opening date was moved from Monday, May 18 to Saturday, May 16 to encourage family attendance; Hammer said the ceremony will start at 10 a.m. with a ribbon cutting and a dedication of a new sculpture, followed by tours of the restored Owen Hall auditorium and the historic gymnasium (now the Heritage Event Center). Sparks Science Center will offer 45 self-guided preview slots with free admission.
Staff invited board members and the public to attend preview events and thanked the board for support of the project.
