The Scottsville Town Council took up a contentious motion to suspend the Government Services Committee for six months and order a formal review after several residents and councilors criticized the panel’s conduct and scope.
Walter Townsend urged action in a forceful floor statement, saying, “I just formally believe we should go ahead and just dissolve government service committee,” framing his motion as a temporary measure until after the upcoming election. Supporters said committee members had been micromanaging town administration; opponents highlighted past committee achievements, including website improvements and capital-process reviews.
Town staff noted the committee’s charter and past contributions. One councilor said the committee had identified an apparent budget discrepancy that led to the town eliminating an underperforming DMV service, which saved “hundreds of thousands of dollars.” A rival councilor cautioned against a “nuclear option” and recommended a review and clearer communication instead.
After extended debate, the council recorded a roll-call vote on whether the committee should remain active. Council responses ranged across the dais; the chair said the council would pursue a formal review and consider reconstituting the committee with clearer charter language and legal counsel at the start of the next year.
The council did not enact permanent dissolution tonight; members agreed on next steps that include inviting the committee chair to respond to council concerns, clarifying the committee charter, and considering any structural changes after the election.
