Work session items focused on the 2026 budget and levy. Auditor-Treasurer Michelle Knutson briefed the board on various ditch assessments planned for 2026 and on current and proposed ditch projects that will be included in the budget. The board also discussed a recent Pheasants Forever land purchase and how that purchase will lower taxes on that parcel.
During public comment, resident Doug Zahn asked about the value of a piece of property; Knutson responded that property values must be discussed with the Assessor and are not decided at this budget hearing. Later, Environmental Director Darren Wilke, Assessor Sandy Vold and Auditor-Treasurer Knutson recommended funding solid waste services through levy dollars rather than by property-level assessment. Commissioner Radermacher moved to change solid waste back to an assessment and Chairman Athey seconded; the motion failed 2–3 (Radermacher and Athey aye; Thyne, Zimmel and Klages nay). The minutes record the vote but do not show further direction or a final decision to change funding method at this meeting.
