Council updates hotel definitions to allow general hotel use in Town Center

The Johns Creek City Council voted Aug. 19 to approve text amendments to the zoning ordinance and the alcohol ordinance that modernize the definitions of "hotel" and "boutique hotel" and add a provision permitting a general hotel use in the Town Center code.
Director Song said staff reviewed neighboring jurisdictions and concluded the revised definitions would allow larger hotels with amenities such as convention space, ballrooms and restaurants that are not covered by the existing boutique‑only language. "We just decided to remove all restrictions related to number of rooms because we have a proper definition in place now for boutique hotel and to include a provision for hotel use as well," Director Song said, noting the Planning Commission recommended approval and suggested removing the word "transient" from the hotel definition.
A public hearing drew no speakers. A council member moved to approve ordinances O2024‑08‑18 and O2024‑08‑19 as presented; a second was recorded and the motion passed on voice vote. The change updates the Town Center code to allow broader hospitality uses, which proponents said could support conventions and expanded restaurant activity in the area.
