Council seeks public input, RPAC vetting for Creekside Park renaming

Erica Madsen, Recreation and Parks staff, summarized RPACs recommendation: "we put out a survey to the public and then got the big list of names that the public comes up with then staff would shortlist those names bring it back to RPAC they would recommend 1 to council for final selection." Mayor (speaker 2) asked that staff and RPAC work more closely on a refined list so the council would not be faced with a single binary choice. "I like to put a little bit of a different nuance... that there be a process of collaboration between the staff and RPAC to narrow that into, I don't know, maybe 5 or 7 names," the mayor said.
Council favored a customized approach in which the public would submit names, staff and RPAC would vet and narrow entries, and the council would select the final name from a curated shortlist. Members discussed setting a minimum of five and a maximum of 10 names to be forwarded to council, and suggested considering live-upvote or polling tools as part of the public input stage. Staff confirmed the proposed flow: crowdsourced submissions, internal vetting by staff and RPAC, and a council decision on the shortlist delivered by RPAC and staff.
The council did not take a final vote during the work session; staff will implement the councils direction to compile a curated shortlist (min 5, max 10) and return to council with the process details and proposed timelines.
