The board reviewed and adopted a new Emergency Safety Interventions policy (JGC) that formalizes procedures for seclusion and physical restraint and shortens the required parent notification window to 15 minutes after an incident. A staff presenter explained that the district has long followed procedures similar to the draft policy and that the change aligns with updated state law. "Physical restraint may only be used in self defense, to obtain possession of a weapon or other dangerous object ... to protect the student or another individual from physical injury," the presenter said when explaining the policy's limits.
Board members pressed for clarifications about which students and circumstances trigger ESI. Staff replied that seclusion rooms and formal ESI are typically used in cases tied to IEPs and documented behavioral plans, that Safety Care and Canvas training are required for staff, and that the district will attempt to contact parents to pick up students when possible to avoid seclusion. After discussion, a motion to accept JGC passed by voice vote.
