Sewer-line realignment, streets progress and Safe Routes sidewalk planning discussed

Public works briefed the council on infrastructure projects including sewer-line work, street resurfacing and sidewalk projects tied to Safe Routes to School.
Staff described a planned relocation of a sewer line along the east fence line of Friendship Park (near 700 East) to correct a longstanding problem; crews hope to construct the line in spring, which will also affect monument-installation scheduling. On streets, staff said chip seal is complete and most asphalt is in place but a handful of manhole, valve and gutter tie-ins remain, and new mains must pass bacteria and chemical tests before final connections. "Your road project is very... almost done," a staff speaker said, while noting testing and a short contract extension for five added service ties.
On sidewalks, staff noted design work on Adams Avenue between 40th and 42nd is underway and that the school district’s decision to stop busing students north of 40th will change pedestrian needs next year; staff and a consultant will revise Safe Routes plans and identify key gap repairs.
