Council hears police and fire staffing requests; tier-2 retirement costs noted

City staff told the council that the police department seeks to convert a part-time office specialist position to full time at a cost estimated around $45,000 including benefits, and asked for funding to raise crossing-guard staffing from four to five in the coming year. Staff said the school district has provided a one-year leeway on crossing-guard coverage, but the department wants to retain and fairly compensate the positions to avoid turnover.
Staff also emphasized ongoing fire-department staffing pressure, noting one station currently can provide only limited shift coverage and that the department has asked for an additional firefighter. Staff added that the city previously approved a fire truck purchase with ARPA funds. On retirement costs, staff reported a prior estimate that covering increased tier-2 URS contributions for public-safety employees could cost roughly $78,400, a figure not yet built into the current budget.
