Sheriff proposes consolidated fleet maintenance and outlines facility needs for operations

Sheriff Brian Mueller told the commission departments have reviewed vehicle inventories and maintenance budgets and that consolidating fleet management could yield substantial savings. He said a centralized software system and adding one full-time county mechanic could provide economies of scale for routine maintenance across smaller departments.
"We believe that we could do a consolidated fleet management software system that would greatly help across the county," Sheriff Mueller said, and added the county could realize cost savings by pooling maintenance functions and purchasing power. The sheriffs office currently manages over 120 vehicles and other departments manage several hundred pieces of equipment.
On facilities and capital projects, the sheriff described a prospective new operations campus: ideally 5 to 10 acres and roughly 75,000 to 100,000 square feet to consolidate fleets, mechanics and radio/radio tech operations. Commissioners asked staff to obtain market data and realtor estimates for available buildings and sites, and suggested analyzing TIF or donated-land options that might reduce upfront county costs.
The commission asked staff to return with cost estimates and market availability to inform whether buying an existing building or pursuing new construction is preferable; commissioners warned that sales-tax revenues tied to TIF developments will not be available to the county until 2028, affecting cashflow assumptions.
