During administrative reports at the June 22 meeting, the mayor recounted a major recent storm that left significant damage across the city. He said most city employees were deployed to clearing operations, public-safety calls surged (the police had more than 400 calls for service the night of the storm) and the fire department responded repeatedly for downed wires and safety calls. Mutual‑aid crews from Wellington and Oberlin assisted, and contracted tree crews helped with clearing.
The mayor provided preliminary cost figures: he said wages for extra work were approaching ‘‘about $100,000’’ and parts for the electric department (transformers, fuses, wiring) were ‘‘upwards of $35,000.’’ He cautioned the final total is not yet known. The city has hired contractors to assist where in‑house resources are insufficient and noted Republic Services offers bundled limb pickup for residents.
The council accepted the administration reports by motion and vote. The mayor said the administration will continue to track costs and follow up with additional information as it becomes available.
