Fire, police report staffing and response updates; K9 unit joining March 17

At the March 3 meeting Fire Chief Colton reported the town’s fire department has switched to First Due reporting in coordination with Cle Elum, completed a four‑hour Washington Surveying and Rating Bureau (WSRB) evaluation at the station and expects to remain at the same rating. Colton also said the department is in line to receive surplus rigs from the Department of Natural Resources and that crew shirts and stickers have been distributed.
Chief Deputy Ben Kokjer reported on police matters and urged residents who have observed criminal behavior to report it repeatedly. Kokjer said a K9 unit will join the Sheriff’s Department on March 17, 2026, and that two new deputies are currently in training and expected to be ready in August.
