Board honors student athletes, highlights free vision screenings for 71 students

The South Sanpete School District board opened its Nov. 11 meeting by recognizing students who made academic all-state teams and noting state-level finishes in cross country and girls soccer.
Trevor (speaker 3) listed honorees including Carly Tanner (girls soccer), Brianna Dover (girls tennis), Alana Peterson (cross country), Waylon Sorensen (football) and Addison Howe (volleyball), and noted junior Paul Gardner and senior Vincent May finished close together in the cross-country state meet. ‘‘Anyone that makes it to the state championship game… it’s not an easy accomplishment,’’ Trevor said.
The board also discussed a districtwide vision screening hosted with Sight Buddies Charity Vision and local partners; school nurses coordinated the event and 71 students received screenings and free glasses at no cost to families. Jake (speaker 5) and others credited Katie Nelson and community partners, including a university eye institute, for organizing the clinic.
Board members said the screenings improve classroom learning by addressing undiagnosed vision problems. The district will maintain outreach to principals to ensure follow-up care and documentation for grant reimbursement and program evaluation.
The board moved on to business after offering thanks to coaches and staff involved with the recognized students and the vision event.
