City staff briefed the council July 28 on the Mayor’s Alliance to End Childhood Hunger and the Pack A Smile Food Giveaway. Public Services manager Crystal Lopez said the initiative—launched in 2024 in partnership with local schools, nonprofits and the county—returned last year with more than 700 backpacks distributed and has expanded for 2026.
Lopez said the city has received an updated $36,000 in combined monetary and in‑kind contributions (staff provided an earlier figure of $31,000 that was updated shortly before the meeting), and more than 15 business and agency partners. Monetary donations are being used to purchase backpacks, nonperishable food and grocery gift cards; in‑kind donations include a fruit truck, vouchers and food items. The city plans to distribute over 12,100 backpacks for children 18 and under on Thursday, Aug. 6 at Bob Glass Gymnasium from 2–4 p.m., while supplies last. The event will include vendors providing healthcare and educational resources.
Council members praised staff and volunteers and encouraged residents to follow event postings on the city website and social media.
