Resident urges council to follow general plan, warns of traffic and school strain

During public comment at the Jan. 14 council meeting, Gordon Smith of South Weber told the council that repeatedly amending the city’s general plan risks making it ineffective and urged the council to adhere to the plan’s guiding principles. Smith also raised practical concerns about a proposed subdivision adjacent to his property: increasing traffic on South Weaver Drive, difficulty crossing the street to pick up mail, pressure on an already full elementary school and potential additional costs for police and fire services that could affect the city budget and property taxes.
Smith said the planning commission had discussed a traffic study at a prior meeting and argued the city should require a traffic study before approving the subdivision rather than after. “By constantly amending the plan, it seems like the plan becomes worthless,” Smith said during his three-minute public-comment slot.
Council members thanked Smith for his remarks and noted the planning process and upcoming agenda items would address elements of traffic and infrastructure as part of the rezoning and site-plan reviews.
