Planning commission approves new sign for Mika Ventures at 341 South Main

The Alpine City Planning Commission on July 1 approved a commercial building sign application for Mika Ventures at 341 South Main Street.
City Planner Ryan Robinson told the commission the proposal is a 52-square-foot wall sign that would occupy less than 3% of the building side and includes halo backlighting. "We've looked at the code 32580... it looks like everything is in order for it to meet those standards," Robinson said. He noted staff's role was administrative: to confirm the application complies with technical requirements and present it to the approving body for design review.
Commissioners discussed whether the sign meets the Gateway Historic District design guidelines. Several members said the new sign appears more compatible than the existing gold sign. "I looked at this in comparison to the sign that's there, and I think that this one looks better than the big gold sign that's there," Commissioner Greg Butterfield said. No members raised objections to the size, materials or the backlighting in the meeting's discussion.
Susan Wittenberg moved to approve the application as proposed; Jeff Davis seconded. The commission approved the motion by unanimous voice vote. The commission did not receive public comment on the item during the meeting.
The action is recorded as an approval by the Planning Commission. Any future questions about design standards in the Gateway Historic District will be considered through the commission's ongoing work on tightening those guidelines.
