Development Services Director Ahmed Alkasy outlined a multi-pronged traffic signal program that includes replacing older cabinets, installing radar detection systems and adding remote monitoring via modems. On the Parkerville/Academy Way intersection, staff noted the installation of a radar detection system and a project budget listed on the slide; Alkasy emphasized privacy protections for the new equipment: "I wanna assure the residents, you know, those radars do not pick license numbers or anything. They're just looking for the vehicles for the purpose of detecting vehicles and then allocate a better, timing," he said.
Alkasy also cited several grants supporting signal work: a $1,330,000 TxDOT grant for Wintergreen/Westmoreland signal work, a $1,270,000 grant for Beltline and Cockrell Hill safety improvements, and a three-city regional grant of about $2,000,000 to add modem monitoring and emergency-vehicle systems that will be voted on by the technical committee and the regional transportation committee (RTC) in upcoming meetings.
