Manager Brett Palmer reported that the Division of Drinking Water has proposed a new fee to cover shrinking federal funding; the fee is roughly 3 cents per 1,000 gallons in the division's presentation. Palmer said applying the state's average would yield about $20,000 per year for the district, but using SPID’s 2024 water-usage data would double that to about $40,000 annually.
Palmer said he raised the possibility of a variance for districts that use drinking water for irrigation because SPID lacks a secondary irrigation supply. Several municipalities at the Division’s informational meeting reported similar increases. The manager said the formal public-comment period will open in September and that the district will monitor and consider submitting comments.
