Council OKs bid solicitation for Chambersburg Road West widening; $2.2M grant cited

The project scope includes widening from two to three lanes, lowering a roadway crest, adding curb, storm sewer, a water main, an 11‑foot concrete bike path on the north side and a 5‑foot sidewalk on the south side. "The city is receiving federal grant money for this from the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission to help cover the cost of the improvements, and that's roughly $2,200,000 in grant money to help cover the cost," Public Works staff said. Staff said plans were designed by Choice 1 Engineering and approved by ODOT.
Staff told council they expect to advertise for bids in June or July, bring back contract recommendation after bidding, and begin construction late summer into fall with a construction duration the engineer estimated at roughly nine months; staff said work will likely be phased so residents maintain property access. Council and staff also discussed how the bike path will eventually connect to the Miami River Bikeway under a separate MVPRC‑funded project that may take several years to reach construction.
Next steps: staff will bring bid documents to council authorization for advertisement and return with a contract award recommendation after bids are opened.
