Commissioner and consultant press to restore ‘belonging’ language in draft strategic plan

The City of Hutto DEIB Commission discussed gaps between the current DEIB strategic plan and the city’s new overall strategic plan, with the consultant urging commissioners to preserve language and commitments tied to belonging and inclusive culture.
Stan, the consultant leading the presentation, told the commission the prior plan included explicit wording to “create a community that is engaged, tolerant and compassionate” and said that the new city strategic-plan phrasing — which emphasizes “strengthen public trust through reliable public safety services, transparent communication, responsive engagement” — omits much of that earlier language. Stan said this omission gave him concern about how strongly DEIB commitments are integrated into broader city policy and recommended flagging items as completed, in progress, or recommended for the 2026–27 plan so commissioners could prioritize work.
Commissioners discussed establishing an ongoing forum with city staff and council, running a public presentation of the DEIB plan at council, and using working groups and an ambassador program to sustain efforts. Staff confirmed the DEIB plan is published on the commission webpage and that Stan will update slides and circulate a revised package by the end of the week.
