Billings County fire district reports rising call volume, flags burn-ban rules ahead of library opening

At its March 18 meeting in Medora, the Billings County Rural Fire Protection District reported increased call activity: nine new calls since the last meeting and 13 calls year-to-date, compared with six calls at the same point last year. The district also reported 43 controlled burns YTD.
Recent incidents listed by staff included grass fires near I-94 (MM32 and 42nd St), a semi tip-over on I-94 MM94, a semi-versus-pickup crash on Hwy 85 MM78, a fire alarm at Elkhorn Quarters and several EMS assists. Board members reiterated that the burn ban remains tied to the Fire Index—no burning when the index is High or above—and said they will consider tighter restrictions during June and July when visitor levels for the TR Presidential Library opening increase; the Forest Service indicated openness to such restrictions.
