Sarah Frank, Unity Parks volunteer league coordinator, told council that Unity Park supports 12 dedicated lighted courts and a consistent daily player base that includes 102 unique league players and a community group organizing open play. Frank described how courts attract players from across Denton County and help position Highland Village as a local destination for pickleball.
"Unity Park supports 12 dedicated lighted courts... combined that represents... about 864 active players just on a daily basis," Frank said while reviewing the court counts and league composition. She also provided a snapshot of league fees and revenue: league revenue was about $14,000 in 2024, $16,000 in 2025, and is projected near $14,400 for the current year (league fees only, excluding court rentals and visitor spending). Frank said she hopes to expand youth programming in partnership with Briar Hill and to develop beginner and senior classes.
Frank and council members also discussed injuries and safety (ankles, lateral-motion hamstring strains and eye protection recommendations) and how indoor facilities and competing venues affect seasonal league numbers. Staff noted that league fees are one piece of cost recovery and that a complete accounting of labor and capital costs will follow in a revised CityWorks report.
Ending: Staff said it will incorporate Unity Park revenue and labor detail into the broader parks cost-recovery review and follow up on potential school partnerships and senior programming.
