Council authorized a $442,430 construction contract with Sports Field Solutions, LLC to renovate irrigation and turf at Unity Park flex field and the Brazos flag-football area, noting the work was funded from the 2022 bond program. Staff explained the scope: apply herbicide two weeks before groundbreaking, remove old heads and unwanted vegetation, incorporate sandy loam into the soil profile, laser-grade, install a new irrigation system (including a new meter for Unity if necessary), compact trenches and hydro-mulch with sports turf seed. "A new irrigation system will provide better head to head coverage so that all areas can receive the necessary amount of irrigation and the turf can be better maintained," staff said.
The contractor is ready to begin this summer and staff estimated about 90 days for completion; council members discussed temporary displacement of informal users and notification needs, especially ahead of herbicide application. Staff said they will follow label requirements for herbicide use, post signs and coordinate with user groups and neighboring parks for temporary alternatives where possible. The resolution passed on a voice vote with no recorded opposition.
