Council debated trade-offs: trees require years to provide shade and carry survival risk; keeping the turf argues for an engineered shade structure rather than demolition; and some firms would not warranty modifications to the existing posts. One council member moved to approve the CDC funding agreement and the motion, seconded at the dais, passed 4–1. Staff said the chosen structure will match adjacent park sail aesthetics and has an expected fabric life of roughly seven to eight years under the vendor's standard materials.
