Board keeps correctional-officer overtime rule after heated discussion

Vernon County supervisors on March 21 considered revisions to Policy 503 (Overtime and Compensatory Time) that included a provision (section 2.2) applying a different overtime calculation to correctional officers.
Supervisor Jacobson moved to remove section 2.2 arguing it singles out correctional officers and conflicts with the Sheriff Office internal policy; the motion was seconded by Supervisor Eggen but failed after discussion. Sheriff Torgerson told the board he was concerned the change would harm the office’s ability to secure staff for last-minute coverage. Supervisor Meehan-Strub read a statement from Supervisor Taylor urging financial prudence: "It is our responsibility to manage our benefits in the most financially responsible way."
Administrative Coordinator Cassie Hanan said a department-specific incentive-based policy could be developed if needed and that removing 2.2 would treat correctional officers like other county staff. On the main motion the revised Policy 503 was adopted by voice vote.
