NRCS and county staff say FEMA flood maps may need remapping after dam removals; NRCS to fund local remapping in dam vicinities

Monique Hassman, Vernon County GIS Coordinator and Land Information Officer, told the board she believes FEMA flood-insurance rates and maps "may not be accurate" after decommissioning and urged efforts to correct local maps. Zoning Administrator Matt Albright said he has requested remapping to obtain an accurate assessment of affected areas.
Steve Becker told the board that when FEMA originally prepared hydraulic analyses for the flood-insurance program, "for whatever reason, they did not include the storage capacity of the dams," and that the NRCS has set aside funds to remap Zone A areas in the vicinity of the dams. Becker said additional information will be included in final documents to make the mapping issue clearer.
