Residents urge pay increases for election workers and say appraisal process is "broken"

Faith Martin, a Sedgwick County election supervising judge who spoke during the county budget hearing, urged the board to find money for higher election-worker pay ahead of larger elections next year. "Find $93,000 and pay our election workers," Martin said, noting that many workers are leaving because pay and time demands make the job impractical.
Martin also questioned which items the county lists as "core services," called attention to line items such as Intrust Arena and other agency requests, and described the appraisal and appeals processes as broken: "The appraisal process is broken...the appeals process is absolutely broken," she said. Chairman Blue Wah thanked Martin for the comments and said the budget includes funding intended to address appraisal-related needs and that staff is reviewing property-assessment practices. The board directed staff to provide additional information on staffing for the imminent election.
