Commission approves countywide wildfire protection plan and agreement

Box Elder County commissioners approved the countywide Wildfire Protection Plan and Agreement No. 2606 after the Fire Marshal briefed the board on recent mitigation work and the state’s sign-off.
Kevin Lloyd, the county fire marshal, said the plan covers response and mitigation across high and lower wildland-urban-interface areas countywide and that the state has already signed off. Lloyd reported that last year the county fuels crew completed mitigation work on roughly 14,000 acres — cutting, piling, burning and mulching — and noted the county has purchased heavy equipment to support those efforts. "State signed it off already. So now it's just up to you guys," Lloyd said. Commissioner Perry moved to approve the plan; the motion passed unanimously.
Commissioners indicated support for continuing mitigation and coordinating the participation portion of the agreement tied to the county’s wildfire mitigation activities.
