Commission renews cooperative patrol agreement with U.S. Forest Service

Box Elder County commissioners voted to renew cooperative law‑enforcement agreement number 26‑CO4 with the U.S. Forest Service, approving the county sheriff’s office to continue patrolling national forest lands with partial federal reimbursement.
Chief Deputy Kate Palmer, who manages the contract for the sheriff’s office, told the commission the agreement reimburses the county “for our patrol time we spent in Cache National Forest … It’s for $6,000.” Palmer added that annual patrol costs have historically ranged between $6,000 and $10,000 and that the office will seek higher reimbursement where possible. Commissioner S5 moved to renew the contract; the motion was seconded and the commission voted in favor.
Palmer said staff review radio logs and case records to document patrol time and that the county will pursue additional federal funding when feasible. Commissioners asked staff to follow up on discussions to seek higher reimbursements in future negotiations.
The agreement takes effect for the coming year and the commission authorized signatures to finalize renewal.
