Commission sends East Garland rezoning request back to Planning Commission after public opposition

Community Development Director Scott Lyons recounted the history of Ordinance #599, which was before the Planning Commission in May 2024 and drew extensive public comment opposing half-acre agricultural zoning in the area. Lyons said residents sought a community plan and that the county has moved away from the A‑1/2 zone in many areas. Applicant Brody Calder said he wanted smaller lots so he could reserve property for family homes while maintaining some agricultural use.
The commission voted unanimously to return the rezoning application to the Planning Commission for reexamination and potential rezoning consistent with the county's General Plan and the community plan process. Commissioner Perry made the motion to send the item back for review; Commissioner Bingham seconded and the motion passed on a roll-call vote.
