Aloura Gomez, named Youth of the Year by the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Utah, told commissioners on Feb. 11 that the club had given her a sense of belonging and purpose after years of instability and the death of her brother. "I have always loved sunsets and know how it feels to live in darkness," Gomez said. "Five years ago my brother died of an overdose... the Boys and Girls Club has included me."
JeuneElle Jefferies introduced Gomez and said she will compete next Thursday; commissioners recognized Gomez and wished her luck. The speech highlighted the club's role in supporting young people through family loss, mental-health struggles and transitions into adulthood, and commissioners verbally commended the honoree during the meeting.
