Box Elder County commissioners unanimously approved a renewal of Cooperative Law Enforcement Agreement #26-04 with the U.S. Forest Service on Feb. 11, 2026. Sheriff Kevin Potter and Chief Deputy Cade Palmer described the agreement as a renewal of a longstanding intergovernmental arrangement to patrol Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest lands within the county.
The Forest Service operating plan attached to the agreement lists $6,000 in FY2026 funding to reimburse the county for intensified patrol activities (priority areas named include Box Elder Canyon, Willard Basin/Dock Flat and dispersed recreation sites). "We will be reimbursed up to $6,000.00," Sheriff Kevin Potter said while presenting the agreement. The commission voted to approve Agreement #26-04 and the board signed the document during the meeting; the agreement text and operating plan are included in the meeting packet.
The agreement requires annual reporting of crimes on National Forest lands, coordination of patrol schedules, and compliance with training and use-of-equipment rules. The operating plan spells out eligible reimbursements (patrol time and allowable incident-related costs) and requires prior written approval for purchases before the Forest Service will reimburse the county.
