Granite City CUSD 9 board approves longer hours and more elementary building aides

The Granite City Community Unit School District 9 Board of Education on July 28 approved increasing elementary building-aide hours and adding staff to support the district’s K–6 model.
Administration recommended raising building-aide hours from three to five per day, adding two building aides at smaller elementary schools and up to four at larger schools. Officials presented estimated costs of roughly $70,200 per year for the increased hours, an additional $58,500 per year for the added positions at large schools, and a combined implementation cost of approximately $128,700 annually. A staff member said the change would allow aides to work consistent schedules from arrival through lunch and provide more reliable coverage.
During discussion a board member expressed support, saying, “Money well spent,” and adding, “They need more help.” The motion to approve the staffing and hour changes passed on roll call with six ayes and one no (Stacy).
