Town attorney outlines filing and resign-to-run rules for 2026 elections

Benavidez said three council seats (incumbents Butterworth, Trate and Thompson) and the office of the mayor (incumbent Johann R. Wallace) will be on the ballot. He reminded the council that voter registration closes Oct. 5, 2026, at midnight under ARS §16-120 and §16-134 and that early voting begins under ARS §16-542(C). He also explained that an incumbent whose term does not expire this year must resign before running for another office.
Mayor Wallace asked that advertising begin now; the minutes show council discussion but no formal action beyond the attorney’s informational presentation.
