County seeks options for Rockwood transfer station wood after DEP-ordered ash removal

U/T Coordinator David Spencer told the Somerset County Commissioners that the county recently removed large amounts of ash from the Rockwood Transfer Station after a requirement from the Department of Environmental Protection and now must decide how to handle wood and brush at the site.
"The County was required by DEP to remove tons of ash that had accumulated over several years," David Spencer said, explaining that burning had been stopped last year and the remaining wood currently on site is being arranged for hauling. He said the manager of the transfer station could continue burning if it were done to DEP regulations, but the county can also pay to haul the material to Skowhegan for processing. Commissioners asked Spencer to investigate costs associated with creating an authorized burn pad and report back to the board.
