Commission allocates up to $4,000 from contingency for volunteer firefighters' thank-you barbecue

The Wilkes County Board authorized an appropriation of up to $4,000 from the Board of Commissioners’ Contingency Fund to help offset costs of a thank-you barbecue for volunteer firefighters who responded to a large wildfire in the McGrady, Traphill and Mulberry-Fairplains areas.
Vice Chairman Evan Handy said the barbecue is intended to honor roughly 250 volunteer firefighters who volunteered time and resources during the fire and noted that much of the burned area is "No Man’s Land," which generates no fire-tax revenue for responding departments. "They're wanting to have a barbecue or some sort of thank you for the firefighters that volunteered to fight that fire," Handy said. The board voted unanimously to appropriate the funds; County Manager John Yates confirmed staff will record the appropriation in the minutes and proceed with arrangements.
Commissioners praised volunteer emergency services and urged community support for fire departments and Emergency Services personnel.
